Google AI Overviews sit at the top of roughly 15-20% of informational search results in 2026, summarizing answers before the traditional 10 blue links even appear. For commercial queries like "best CRM for freelancers," that share climbs to 30-40%. Tracking whether your brand surfaces inside those AI Overviews is now a core AI visibility discipline, not an SEO footnote.
What makes AI Overviews tracking distinct is the personalization. The same query from two different users can show an AI Overview for one and not the other, driven by account, device, search history, and region. This makes single manual checks unreliable. Controlled environments (incognito window, consistent location, logged-out browser) reduce variance, but automated tracking is the only way to scale beyond a handful of prompts.
The good news: Google Search Console now exposes AI Overviews as a search appearance filter in the Performance report. You can see impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position specifically for queries where your content was cited in an AI Overview. This is the only first-party AI visibility data Google provides to publishers and should be your weekly baseline.
The less good news: GSC only tells you where you already appear. It cannot tell you which queries in your category trigger AI Overviews where competitors get cited and you do not. For gap analysis, you need active tracking that queries Google directly and records whether an AI Overview appeared, what the response said, and which sources got cited.
Beyond presence, track AI Overview eligibility (does the query trigger an AI Overview at all), citation position inside the Overview, whether the cited domain is yours or a competitor's, and how the AI Overview impacts total query CTR. An AI Overview that satisfies the user can reduce your organic CTR by 20-40%, so appearing inside the Overview becomes critical.
