update_project_settings
update_project_settings MCP tool: turn a project's e-commerce mode on or off. On e-commerce projects, retailers and products cited by AI answers are sorted apart from competitor brands.
Updated 2026-10-07
update_project_settings changes a project's settings. It currently sets one: ecommerce, which tells Mentionable the brand sells products online. It writes the same setting as the e-commerce switch in the project settings of the dashboard.
On an e-commerce project, AI answers name more than rival brands: they send the buyer to a store (Amazon, a pharmacy, a marketplace) or name a product. The AI then sorts every entity cited in answers into three groups: competitor brands, retailers (where the buyer is sent) and products (product names). Retailers and products stay out of the competitors view, so it only shows brands you really compete with.
When to use
Call it when the agent learns the brand sells online, for example after reading the site from list_projects (the url and ecommerce fields) and finding a shop, or when the user says "Amazon and Boots are not my competitors, they sell my products". Turn it off for a brand that does not sell products online, such as a service business or a SaaS.

Input
| Field | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
projectId |
string (CUID) | required | Project to update. |
ecommerce |
boolean | required | true: the brand sells products online, retailers and products are sorted apart from competitors. false: plain competitor or not-competitor sorting. |
Response
{ "success": true, "projectId": "clx0000aaa", "ecommerce": true }
The response echoes the value now stored on the project.
Behavior
- Turning it on re-sorts the past. The competitors the AI already judged on this project are sorted again in the background, with the three groups. Retailers and products then leave the competitors view. It runs after the response: read
list_competitorsa little later to see the result. - Saving the same value twice does nothing. Only a switch from off to on starts a re-sort.
- Turning it off undoes nothing. Entities already sorted as retailers or products keep that verdict. Only the next scans go back to the plain competitor or not-competitor sorting.
- Only AI verdicts are re-sorted. Competitors added by hand and entities you rejected are left as they are. To move one yourself, use
bulk_update_competitor_status.
Tips and patterns
- Check the
ecommercefield oflist_projectsbefore calling: if it already has the value you want, there is nothing to do. - After turning it on, list retailers with
list_competitorsandfilters.verdict: ["RETAILER"], and products with["PRODUCT"]. - Fix a wrong sort entity by entity with
bulk_update_competitor_statusand itskindfield (COMPETITOR,RETAILER,PRODUCT).
